Humans are NOT hooked as machines are learning - There has been public calls to halt the development of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI*), which is AI systems that are generally smarter than humans.
Researchers shared “Given the breadth and depth of GPT-4's capabilities, we believe that it could reasonably be viewed as an early (yet still incomplete) version of an artificial general intelligence (AGI) system”**
Ok, let’s step back and look at the big picture.
Reminding everyone that historically humans have not been good at predicting the implications of technologies.
Don’t get me wrong, I believe our concerns are valid. But, we are not helpless, we have successfully put controls around the development of certain technologies and continue to innovate.
I keep reading opinion pieces about doomsday scenarios and uncontrollable machine intelligence wiping out humanity. I believe the mystique around the development of AGI has been leveraged to get our attention and market gain.
Arthur C. Clarke once wrote that, “any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic” and we are having another moment of that with large language models and generative AI.
Is this magic or reflection of human intelligence with advance math, statistics, modeling, chat and visualization techniques all working together? I am in the latter camp.
What can we do?
It’s our responsibility to demystify the development of AGI and put controls in place. Where we go from here is our choice. Reminding us, we are in the driver seat, not the machines (at least for now).
What is AGI?
“Artificial general intelligence (AGI) is the ability of an intelligent agent to understand or learn any intellectual task that human beings or other animals can. It is a primary goal of some artificial intelligence research and a common topic in science fiction and futures studies. AGI is also called strong AI, full AI, or general intelligent action, although some academic sources reserve the term "strong AI" for computer programs that experience sentience or consciousness” by Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia.
